Sometimes it’s quite tricky to evaluate the impact of the world, especially when it comes to changes in attitudes and values, and indirect impact. First of all, it’s very important to know what exactly you want to achieve, to be aible to measure the impact. You can do quality work, but if it doesn’t have the results you want, then you have to ask yourself, am I doing the right thing and am I doing it well?

In February I was for the first time in sub-Saharan Africa. During the last days of our stay in Kenya, I was asked, how has the concept of development changed for me during the trip? Well, this has been an eye-opening opportunity for me.

A couple of weeks ago I was visiting Kenya. It was a big change in many ways for me. It was my first visit in sub-Saharan Africa, although I already know some people from there, it was really interesting to experience a different way of living. Even the conception of time seems to be different in Africa. But now I'm back to Finland.

I will continue a little bit more aobut the topic I wrote last time. I wrote about the work that David Korpela has been doing to change attitudes. In many African countries the witch doctors and other traiditonal beliefs still have a huge influence to attitudes.

In a book Prisoners of Freedom – Human rights and the African poor (Englund 2006) it says that whereas the Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes civil, political, social and economic rights alike, various governments have emphasized only some rights at the expense of others.

The Center Youth Finland have a campaign about the foodsecurity that is an issue as well here in Filnand as in countries that are as far as in Africa. Farmers everywhere share some issues and their working conditions need to be protected in order to promote foodsecurtiy everywhere in the world. Here is the campaign video, that I find hilarious. At the same time it raises awareness of the problems of farmers and of everybody, the problems that have to do with food security , the problems that will be bigger the years to come. I think we should be taking it seriously now. The campaign is called "From Elimäki to Ethiopia" (Elimäki being a finnish rural municipality.)
