Why all eyes should not be on the summit

Published 20th September 2010 - 2 comments - 1199 views -

Today is the start of the main event, the big one, the thing we have all been waiting for - day one of the MDG review summit. By tomorrow, we'll have a pretty good idea of where it's going and what we can expect from world leaders and all the important people at the UN.

That is all jolly good. But I must admit, tomorrow, my mind won't be on day two's proceedings in NYC. At least, not entirely.

By sheer coincidence, tomorrow, the half-point of the summit is also Peace Day, the brainchild of British film-maker Jeremy Gilley

In 1999, preoccupied with questions about the fundamental nature of humanity and the most pressing issues of our time, he launched Peace One Day and set out to find a starting point for peace. He had a mission: to document his efforts to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date.

The result of the Peace One Day campaign is this, the 21st September, world Peace Day. It took two years for Gilley to reach his goal, convincing 192 member states of the UN to agree his idea. 21st September is now an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace.

Let me assure you, this is not some hippy-dippy 'let's all hug a tree' for 24-hours event, but a day which has resulted in the Taliban (as well as many others) laying down their arms this time last year, albeit for just one day. So let's not get too hung up on the summit like we did with COP15 and all the others. There is life beyond the walls of the UN and there are lives being changed by many a campaign. Keep your eyes peeled for the goings-on of Peace Day 2010, and when you hear about a peaceful act where or near where you are, post it up here please!

    Hey Lara,
