Crisis Reporting: Global Food Insecurity 2010

Published 02nd August 2010 - 6 comments - 1423 views -

I hadn’t visited the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting until it joined forces recently with Global Voices. It is an amazing website overflowing with online journalism about international issues. GV health editor Juhie Bhatia is leading the Global Voices on Food Insecurity project.

Global Voices Food Insecurity 2010

The first couple of stories give a taste of what is to come:

The risk posed by a fungus that is deadly to the world's second largest crop, wheat, continues to rise. The killer fungus, called Ug99, causes stem rust disease, which can destroy entire wheat fields.
Global Threat of Wheat Killer Rises
Many solutions have been proposed to help combat hunger in Africa, but one in particular remains controversial: biotechnology.

These stories can be found at:

The Pulitzer Gateway

Global Voices on Food Security

The Gateway has other Food projects. According to the Pulitzer website:

The Pulitzer Gateway on Food Insecurity is a place to learn about under-reported, yet critical, global Food issues from around the world. Below are a few of the Food Insecurity projects the Center has supported. The Pulitzer Center invites you to share your own story about this issue too.

- Can Biotechnology Save Africa?
- Paraguay: The Soybean Wars
- The Intersections of Insecurity in Nigeria, India and Malawi

In addition GV has ongoing coverage of the Food Topic from authors around the world.

Spread the news about these two excellent online resources!

One of the great things about Global Voices’ posts is that they are often translated into languages other than English. An example: Afrique: Les problèmes de la faim alimentent les débats sur les biotechnologies Lingua volunteers choose which ones they will do.
