Last week I have been to an interesting conference in Brussels titled Genetic Therapies Application in Europe and in Developing Countries. During this conference, a presentation in particular took my attention. An Italian philosopher spoke about the correlation between human being and genetics from a historical point of view. He talked therefore about the use that in the last centuries was done of the genetic theories, such as that gentlemen are more intelligent than women, and similar. Genetics therefore has often been used for propaganda purposes in the past. The professor said that today there is the possibility for the human being to decide, thanks or because of the DNA, how we want our children to be: blond/brown hair, clever, beautiful, etc. All this because the science is “developing” and therefore there is a possibility for people to buy the right chromosomes, the right DNA, and therefore select the characteristics we prefer for our children. The speaker started therefore a reflection on whether should that be called development or not, giving therefore his personal, moral, and anthropological opinion: better to live in a simple way without the development of the science, but in a world where the humans know what they are and define themselves by themselves. I think that this could be an interesting point to discuss in our blog: to what extent should science help our developing world without occurring the risk of having the science defining ourselves?
