I got on my bike, turned down the volume of the music playing in my ears and jumped on the pedals. The wind wasn't blowing in my direction, wasn't making it harder for me to ride the bike either. It just was there, playing with the vanes of the wind turbines. I could even hear the sound of it through my earphones. It made me happy.
What was disturbing me, though, was the sound of my bike's chain. Recent rain, humidity, changes in temperature, the winter... Because of them it was rusty. Not too rusty, but not as new as it had been either. Riding up the hill was just as easy (hard) as it had been the other day. It was just the sound that spoiled the experience.
If you live in a city, where the dominant means of transportation are bikes, rusty and creaky chains are something usual. Somehow you get used to it and stop caring about it. What I could do was to accept it, to get on the bike the next day and, this time, to turn up the volume. I could spend some money and get it fixed. Or, I could just grease it.
If I was to choose the first option, I would have to bear with my creaky chain and then, at some point, to change it for a new one. The second option would have been a good solution, if I didn’t know how to do it myself. The third option made my hands dirty, but after that the ride was just great.
I think we have a problem. And it doesn’t concern bikes and chains. Well, it does, probably, it depends on your perspective. The thing is that we seem to be ignorant about things that are just there, that are a part of our lives or other people’s lives and that’s all about them. Just like a bike. You hope that in the morning it will be there, where you left it last night. And, guess what, that’s it, nothing else.
I cross streets on red, because I don’t feel like wasting time on nothing. In the evening, when I usually ride my bike, there aren’t many cars on the streets. But there are other people on bikes. When I cross the street, I ask myself how many people stop after me and wait for the green light just for the sake of waiting. However, I don’t look back to see. So, if you happen to know the answer, you will know how likely it is for us to accept status quo. And it’s not about rules.
This isn’t something we should accept. It’s great if we could just give some money and get away with it. But when it comes to getting our hands dirty, something changes.
What?

I still would suggest you to wait on red light. There is reason for that.n
