We had to wait one year until Barak Obama finally wrote in his twitter acount "Yes we can". One year until he actually did something what brings him a right to write that message. And after that all the news channels talk about it with the highest euphoria and call it a historic day. Of course they are not talking about twitter, but about his work - health reform. "Obama Signs Historic Health Care Reform Law" and simmiliar higlights news are spreading around the world.
So I automatically ask myself, if the U.S. health reform really is, as Barack Obama says, proof that change is possible, then can we use this model to the changes in the world. Inspiring story of how not to surrender and work hard to achieve a goal? Do we have something to learn from this example to help us achieve a world free of poverty? World with universal primary education system? A world without hunger? Medical aid for all the world's population? etc. ?
At the same time, realizing that not all in this history see Barack Obama as the winner, I can ask another question. Can we learn anything from the U.S. health reform opponents dispute what we can use in the global development debate? How injury bringing solutions worldwide takes a positive image? What do you think?
Political will. The first impressive example of this reform is that there has been compliance with election promises. Barack Obama during the election campaign promised people universal health care and he did not tried to get away from that promise. He has shown a strong commitment to the goal and this is what we call political will. Millennium Development Goals provides a realistic plan to achieve all the goals, all what we just lack is the political will of countries to fulfill their promises made by signing this document.
The mobilization of people. After the bill signing Barack Obama frequently emphasized that it was not him, but people's victory. The people who attacked their representatives to vote for the bill, volunteers, people who have campaigned to support the reform and many other activists who contributed to the support. The reform, which was a replacement for human life have been primarily supported by the same people. Do we hear the same support for the UN millennium development goals of countries to which these objectives have been developed? Maybe we should hear?
Negotiations. Bill which was approved by the House of Representatives has not been fully what Barack Obama wanted. During the legislative process, the U.S. president had to seek compromises between various interests even within the Democratic Party. Therefore, the House of Representatives approved bill is different from that which the Senate approved, and not entirely what Barack Obama wanted. This is an example that sometimes we need to make sacrifices to reach the common goal.
Ordinary people's stories. President could use the usual statistics, during the campaign for reform. For example - 50 million. the population has no insurance and so on. But he did not. He liked the first plan put the stories of ordinary people who suffer from poor health care system. Children who have lost their parents due to poor health care system, old people dying prematurely and so on In his speech before signing the law, he even remember his grandmother, who died from cancer. These stories make the reform a more personal and helps to look at more sensitive to its need. Why do not we get started to focus more on simple stories of people living in poverty? Is it creating more attention to why it is important to fight against poverty than those stories about every 30 seconds. dying African child?
Of course, like every stick has two ends, so this story has another side
The opposition really exists. Health reform has been adopted only a few deadly. It does not appear in other historical documents in the approvals that were approved without dissenting voices. Even in the event, which is Obama's opinion is certainly positive, had a lot of criticism. But what about the third world people? They do not have Fox News channel, which could defend their views. Have we thought that the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals are too unilateral, and we did not catch the opposition?
Money. Under the new legislation, small businesses will have to provide health insurance to all its employees. Some small businesses made the comments during a Fox News Channel. They argue that this might lead them to bankruptcy, they will be forced to raise prices, customers will not buy their services, etc. This brings up an interesting dilemma. Money does not come from nowhere. It's easy to say that there will be ensured that all citizens have health insurance, but something will have to pay a high price for it. It is also easy to say that we need to remove the hunger, but who will pay for food?
The right to be capitalists. Many caught the fact that a new law that would reform the health care system is designed in accordance with the socialist political views. It allows the government to interfere in people's lives and tell them to buy health insurance, with no other choice. The country where freedom is more important than government interference that they prefer to publish pornographic magazines, but not restrictions on freedom of expression, the novelty is really painful. It made me think that there are many political theories, as people manage their own country. And they have the right to choose which is acceptable to them. Do we really have allowed the third world countries, people choose a political ideology, which will use the social welfare by ensuring that all should be provided primary education, health, etc. ? We have chosen the socialist model, which we will try to adapt to all. Why?
However, the fact is obvious - changes have taken place. The world could change. U.S. President himself is the example. How many people a hundred years ago might have thought that the U.S. president one day become a black man? So what once seemed impossible now exists. Something was cynic and did not believe that Barak Obama can change the health care system. But he did. And this gives me hope. Hope that one day he will write in his Twitter account "Yes We Can", because a global problem will be solved.

We should definitely take inspiration from Obama’s health victory. But not just inspiration. It’s living proof that we can climb even the highest of mountains.
My faith was restored last week when we were told that political will is the only obstacle. If it is, then that means that the MDGs and global problems as a whole are achievable, not easy, but achievable -so it’s up to us to follow in the footsteps of everyone that made the health bill a reality, so that the MDGs don’t become just another set of missed and soon forgotten targets.
I was really happy to hear this, but was equally disappointed when I read that Obama opens for off shore drilling around the US
Anyway, for sure Obamas successes and failures are worth studying, for anyone wanting to understand modern politics.
You write “We have chosen the socialist model, which we will try to adapt to all. Why?” What do you mean? Is it not more true to say that we have used the Structure Adjustment Programs to make a lot of countries way more capitalist than they wanted?
As an American, I was ecstatic that the bill was passed even though I had my doubts that it would.
I think it’s good to take this idea on a large scale (i.e. the results of political pressure) but it’s a bit hard to compare or parallel in detail to the MDGs since many factors are so different—specifically because it is a polarizing domestic issue for Americans and we have yet to find a way to figure out how the MDGs can be that mobilizing. I’m not saying that they *shouldn’t* be, but getting people to feel personally involved in something that “doesn’t affect” them per se is much more difficult…
Furthermore, in light of a lot of ignorance shown in American politics, if we can’t even get our own electorate to be informed about their own country, how can we inform them about the rest of the world?
I’m just thinking aloud, but I’d like to know what you think. Thanks, Andrius!
