Mapping Peace

Sorry for the redundancy and apologies to Giedre Steikunaite who wrote a great post on the Global Peace Index already: http://development.thinkaboutit.eu/index.php/think3/post/peace_what_peace/

Check it out!

The Institute for Economics and Peace has launched the 2010 rankings of the Global Peace Index to rate countries by their peacefulness indicators as well as clearly identify those factors serving as the “drivers of peace.”  Check out their interactive map.

The project uses “absence of violence” as an operating definition of peace and ranks 149 countries via 24 indicators in order to capture the more nuanced “texture of peace.”  These indicators come from various organizations such as the World Bank, International Institute of Strategic Studies, UN offices, and the Economist Intelligence Unit.  They range from more qualitative measures like perceived criminality in a society and neighboring country relations to objective statistics such as weapons imports and internal deaths from conflict.

Global Peace Index

The least peaceful country?

Iraq.

And can you find the most peaceful?

Hint: Look southeast.

I’m a sucker for maps, and this one won’t disappoint.  Take five minutes and check it out!
