A POR ELLOS OE, A POR ELLOS OE, A POR ELLOS OE, A POR ELLOS OE OE OE...

Spain's cheering song for the national team

“In my case, some years ago in Mexico I would have not supported Spain, but since I am living here, I feel very welcomed in this country, and I did support Spain. Spain will always be my second option, after Mexico”.

Mayra Rodriguez, a Mexican student currently living in Madrid.

I was lucky enough to be a part of one of the most important highlights in Spain’s 2010. For the first time in history, the country won at the FIFA World Cup. And this happened two days ago. It was amazing seeing people united, celebrating, all wearing “la roja” (a way to refer to the red t-shirt that fans wear in order to show their support for the team). And the best thing is that you could see people from different parts of the world, immigrants, sharing the same passion as their fellow citizens.

“The victory was well deserved. I supported Spain because I am living here at the moment, and I feel more connected with a country were they speak Spanish than any other European country” told me Lourdes Muñoz, a student from Guatemala living in Madrid.

People from different parts of Latin America, Asia and Africa together, united for the same goal: celebrating their homeland’s victory.

I would also like to share some of the pictures I took, in the centre of Madrid:

People coming out of a subway station. The country was red in yellow and red

La Cibeles, the emblematic fountain, supporting the national team as well

People celebrating their nation's victory

¡Qué viva España!

Woow smile I would so have liked to be in Madrid to see this! I was so happy when Iniesta scored - the right player for the right team at the right time. ¡Qué viva España!

I just can agree with Daniel’s comment. Great you were there, enjoyed it and brought us the impressions

  • Hussam Hussein on 13th July 2010:

Great! And in addition, I would say that it was nice to see a team with many players from Real and from Barcelona… and people celebrating in Madrid and in Barcelona… wink

To all : And one of the best impressions I could have was seeing people from different nationalities supporting the same team! Immigrants (as I mentioned in the article) could relate to the same country, even If they came from another. It is a question of an identity…not only the place where you are born, right?

  • Luan Galani on 15th July 2010:

Being honest with you all, I was rooting for the Oranje to take the Cup home. But Spain deserved it. Congrats.

  • Hussam Hussein on 15th July 2010:

Yeah Luan, Spain deserved it wink smile
