Published 29th June 2010 - 0 comments - 1423 views -

In this days a new presidency in the Council of the European Union is starting: the Belgian Presidency. For this reason, Marleen Steenbrugghe, expert on health for the Belgian Presidency, took the floor during a conference on health with a network of the European regions last week in Brussels to underline the Belgian priorities on this issue, which basically are: legislative work (on transbounder helath assistance, pharmaceutic packet, customer information, alimentary’s products customers),  cancer, pandemic and health security, European health work-force, chronic diseases, and pharmaceutical innovation. The Belgian presidency will held the following meetings to discuss the following issues and therefore try to advance the development in the health sector of the following issues:

On the 5th and 6th of July a meeting of the Council to discuss how to reduce the number of cancers in Europe. This is part of a project started in 2008 under the Slovenian presidency.

On the 1st and 2nd of July pandemic and last year’s influence will be discussed by a high level experts panel. On the 9th and 10th of September 2010 a ministerial conference will deal with the issue of the European health work-force while on the 23th and 24th of September they will discuss the issue of innovation and solidarity in the pharmaceutical sector. In October the chronic diseases while in November the tobacco issue will find place on the agenda of the Council.

Overall, therefore, the Belgian presidency will try to face many interesting and urgent issues as far as health is concerned, and hopefully will help not only the EU, but the whole world in developing in this sector.
