Venezuela: Dr. Jacinto Convit develops a vaccine against cancer of breast, colon and stomach.

Published 23rd June 2010 - 22 comments - 48263 views -

A specialist in inmunology, Dr. Jacinto Convit, who works for the Institute of Biomedicine in Caracas, Venezuela, has announced significative progress in the development of what he calls an autogenous vaccine, for the treatment of cancer of breast, colon and stomach.

The inoculation is made up of three basic elements: BCG, formaliter and dead cancer cells . "Due to the use of this last ingredient, the autogenous vaccine can not be produced in series, but it is completely personalized."

According to the press release signed by the Institute itself, in order to clarify doubts and confussions due to the enthusiasm generated by this new,

"Over the past three years, the Institute of Biomedicine has been evaluating a small group of 23 cancer patients, mostly from breast cancer and isolated cases of colon cancer, stomach and brain. With the informed consent form signed by each of these patients, an experimental model of immunotherapy has been applied to them, which has yielded encouraging results and effectively, is free to the patient."

Within this group of patients we found two types: 1) A group who underwent chemotherapy by their treating oncologists (a sample of the tumor removed and then subjected to chemotherapy) 2) Those who refused to be treated with chemotherapy. In both cases, these patients have been referred by their oncologists, who have been duly informed. Similarly, several of the most important Venezuelan institutions accredited in this area have been notified about this immunotherapy model, proposed by a group of researchers from the Institute of Biomedicine.

This vaccine, is characterized for being an autogenous vaccine, since it is made from the patient's own tumor cells. In orden to prepare it, it is required 1 gram of tumor cells, which are combined with the product known as BCG, which has been widely used in the fight against tuberculosis and leprosy, for several decades, with very good results and has also been used in bladder cancer and as adjuvant in the immunotherapy of leishmaniasis."

Dr. Convit, who is 97 years old, is famous worldwide for discovering the vaccine against leprosy, which earned a nomination for the Nobel prize in 1988 (in that year, the Nobel in Medicine was won by Gertrude Elion and George Hitchings, for their work on the treatment of disease and organ transplantation.)

During the interview in which he revealed his progress, Convit said his only interest now is to lead to the Institute of Biomedicine enough patients in need of this vaccine, to move from experimental to massive application. To this end, the patient must have a medical report from his treating oncologist, who endorses the application of the autogenous vaccine. This document will be received at the Institute of Biomedicine for analysis, and thus select who will be treated. This vaccine is free.
Despite Convit not being interested in obtaining recognition for their work, the Venezuelan community has expressed enthusiasm in getting Convit to be nominated again to the Nobel that escaped from his hands in 1988.

Really good news for many of the affected people, as well as NGO’s - well, at least for some of them;)

  • Juan-Pedro Torres on 25th June 2010:

When Dr. Jacinto Convit discovered his vaccine against leprosy several years ago, his results and merits were not originay recognized by the european scientific community, specialy the british who vehemently and selfishly refused to accept Dr. Convit´s discoveries and tried for some time to impose, against all logic, truth and reason, one of theirs as the vaccine creator. Such a behavior was a its time copy of the one followed when Dr. Carlos Finlay, a Cuban, discovered all of the relevants aspects concerning malaria and yellow fever.
I know ahead of time that this opinion will be contested; however it is pure truth. Eurocentrism, i.e. arrogancy, has not admitted and does not feel like admitting that anyone different to them can achieve superior goals in science, technology, arts, literature, etc.

Congratulations Dr. Jacinto Convit. I do wish God gives you 97 more years and his eternal blessings.

  • José Miguel Parrella on 26th June 2010:

Juan Pedro et al., Convit is not even mentioned on international references, say, for example, Wikipedia’s article on Leprosy!

  • Luan Galani on 01st July 2010:

Marianne, thanks a lot for this! I do not know very much on this issue, but, if things really are how you are painting, guys, then it is outrageous. Definitely…

  • Richard on 06th July 2010:

There’s a facebook with the information (Spanish) about the Dr. Jacinto Convit’s work:

Thanks for the tips, Richard. Very useful…

  • Santiago De Finis on 15th July 2010:

    To Juan Pedro Torres:

My dear friend you just hit the very true center of the question !

I’m venezuelan and lived - exiled - in Italy for the last five years and at he time became an expert on decadence !

Europeans are the sole owners of the 7 mortal sins which they religiously practice and therefore they are simply DOOMED !I say this not out of bigotry but out of a simple reflection on the theory of involution (Europe)  and evolution (America).

  • Luan Galani on 18th July 2010:

@Santiago, don’t you think this you said is quite extremist? Strongly I believe we may not generalise such behaviours. I think we can not be that regionalists, separating Europeans and South-Americans, for instance. This regionalism is the same weapon Chávez makes use of. Let’s be a bit more careful.

I understand that much of history is implied in what you pointed out, but that is not enough to say such things, is it?

  • Bart Knols on 25th July 2010:

@Juan-Pedro: Your statements ref Carlos Finlay are incorrect. Although Finlay experimented with yellow fever and played a significant role in the elucidation of the transmission of this disease, the discovery of the life-cycle of malaria parasites goes entirely to the Brits (Ross) and the Italians (Grassi).

Beyond that I entirely agree with Luan’s statement above.

  • Juan-Pedro Torres on 26th July 2010:

To Santiago: So, you´ve been exiled in Europe for years and became an expert in decadence. I´m so sorry for you. Had you stayed in Venezuela, you´d had become an expert in life; however, you stil have time to return and enjoy the most fantastic newest country in the world. More than welcome any time.

To Luan: Why implying Chávez in this discusion? For centuries, historically proven, europeans discriminated and nowadays keep on discriminating against non europeans. Arrogance inherited from the renaissance when they did all they could to ignore and erase arabian civilization achievements. History has always been written by victors and time has come to know real, not conveniently biased, history.

Chávez merit has been to uncover a tiny part of historical reality. He preaches against feudalism, colonialism, imperialism and other evil isms but never against people. Europeans, by hundreds of thosands came to Venezuela seeking for refuge in Venezuela, were received with open arms, rooted here and were always considerated as brothers/sisters members of humanity. Make a comparison with recent european behaviour against all inmigrants, not only latin americans, and compare. Cháves, and myself as well, criticize actions, never persons. José Gervasio Artigas affirmed: With truth, I do not fear nor offend.

Finaly and for all: when I posted my comment, truly, never suspected nor supposed that would crate a historical/philosophical “conversation”, least a political one. Let´s take away masks from our eyes to see truth, let´s resist alienation and secular brain washing,
let´s strive for happiness and put away bittering sentients.

Richiard, thanks for teh link… quite a strong discussion…

  • Helena Goldon on 03rd August 2010:

Hi Marianne, very successful post as I see it smile
I would say it is due to many factors, but - most importantly:
    1. It is very well written
    2. It shows a very positive image of developing countries (something rarely found in the press) and their incredible contribution to the developing work
    3. The problem of cancer affects the whole world - our families and friends and we feel an urge to do something about it.
    Well done!

  • Bart Knols on 03rd August 2010:

@ Helena - don’t forget the success of Facebook, 56 mentions! That’s a great way to collect views…

Marianne, where is the image you make reference to?

  • Marianne Diaz on 04th August 2010:

Hi all! I’m sorry I’ve been away from the discussion, I haven’t had internet connection for a while. I’m very touched by everyone’s interest in this topic and for the exchange of ideas that this article has promoted.
Bart, the image is a picture from breast cancer cells, I only uploaded it for the main page and not for the article (my mistake), but it can be seen here: http://development.thinkaboutit.eu/images/uploads/breast_cancer.jpg
Thanks again to everyone for your interest!

  • Miguel Soto on 17th August 2010:

I’m from Venezuela, I was looking for worldwide acknowledgment of Dr Convit’s findings regarding his vaccine for cancer when I stumbled upon this blog. I think it’s an important breakthrough just by the fact that’s improving the condition of patients without recurring to regular toxic methods so I expected Google to show me more than what I found.

I’m not a medic myself, but come from a family of accomplished oncologists who are aware of Jacinto’s Research. I can tell you for sure Chavez has absolutely nothing to do with this, he’s using it to promote his politic campaign as the upcoming elections are around the corner. He’s not the kind, righteous man Juan Pedro is talking about either. Chavez speaks vehement, full off anger words that you foreign people find exotic and arising, that was the catch for us too when we voted him to power and now come to regret when we found they were all empty promises. Venezuela was the only country that didn’t show neither economic growth nor development last year in the whole continent, and that’s a documented fact.

It’s becouse all this that Jacinto hasn’t go all the way to the media with his findings as he doesn’t want to favor Chavez at least not until his findings are conclusive.

I also wanted to add that all the countries in Latin America share this beautiful way of being regarding opening our doors to foreign citizens. We welcome people and treat them as family because it’s part of out culture. This has nothing to do with Chavez either.

  • Juan-Pedro Torres on 17th August 2010:

To Miguel: Greetings! I should write to you in spanish provided you are venezuelan as you say; however, you seem to prefer a foreign native tongue. I copy again my previous remark: “(I)never suspected nor supposed that would create a historical/philosophical “conversation”, least a political one”. I wonder why anti-chavistas are similar to evangelistics. First talk only about the bible. Second only about Chávez. Please review my previous comments and will find absolutely no implications nor connections Chávez/Convit, and my sole Chávez reference was about his way to let people know about interestedly biased hidden historical facts.
Luan brought up a new point and I asked him a question: “Why implying Chávez in this discusion?”.
Believe me, I utterly hate to discuss with deaf people and I utterly hate to show evidence to blind people; so Miguel, with due respect, I am sorry not to pick up the glove you threw me.
I had thought the discussion to be over, and profit from this new opportunity to remark Dr. Convit´s marvelous achievements for the advance of science and, specially, for his humbleness and absolute contempt for economical reward. God bless you Dr. Convit.

  • Miguel Soto on 17th August 2010:

I choose to write in English because that’s the universal tongue worldwide and so does Juan as I can tell he’s from similar origins given his name. Please take it as a gesture of politeness to the users of this board.

Furthermore, My post was not addressed specifically to Juan Pedro but since Chavez name was brought up I just wanted to let everyone know his involvement to this research which is none, and not my own opinion

@Juan Torres: I surely touched one of Pedro’s points in which he implied Chavez speaking the non biased truth to the world. and despite of my “blindness” I could strongly argue this matter with you. Do you live here to begin with? otherwise you might look naive again just like when you criticized Europe for its immigration politics and “cockiness” without taking into account the facts behind it.  I’m sorry if you felt I was discrediting your comments, not my intention at all, in fact I do agree with some of your remarks and find hard to understand why a clearly well educated man as yourself took such an unbiased stand.

Also with due respect, feel free to pick the glove anytime you want, just by looking at the way you attacked the person (me) and not my Opinions or actions using valid arguments, tells me you don’t even believe in what you’re saying, so I wont be hard to best you on this debate.

Cya around, try to chill commie fellow wink

  • Juan-Pedro Torres on 18th August 2010:

Miguel; greetings again. I want to end this kind of nutty political discussion on this blog, ever since it is intended to scientific matters; i.e. Dr. Convit´s achievements and other related subjets, social, human, historical, etc. So, let´s keep Chávez and venezuelan political facts out of it and restrain ourselves to that enviroment. Other themes are to be put on different tables and there are so many; therefore I do apologize to non involved.
Now to all: history is neutral once true facts are clearly brought up but it is imperative to uncover them and shed light upon.
    Happy day to all!!

PS to Miguel (and ohers as well who are cordially invited): please feel free to follow me in http://juanpedrotorres.blogspot.com although it is written in spanish.

  • Louise Wilkinson on 21st May 2012:

My dear! This is quite possibly the most fascinating and exciting site ever! I mean forever! Your site provides me another passion aside from gaining facts about
Thomas and that is to explore Venezuela:. I definitely going to browse your page everyday and familiarize myself with the material.

  • Gilbert Ryan on 31st July 2012:

A very special content as always!! I would like to say thanks for the conception about the worldwide acknowledgment of Dr Convit’s findings regarding his vaccine for cancer. Keep it up!

    Ryan ecommerce!

  • Pedro Alonso on 06th February 2013:

I did enjoy reading the news about Dr Convit research on cancer. I passed to all my colleagues in my research institute who were really excited about it. Definitevely, the work of Dr Convit will pave the way for better research strategies on cancer. However, it is a pity that some people are using this forum as an arena to drain resentment and hatred towards other nationalities. I do accept that before the people were more unaware of the unfair behaviour of the so-called “Powerful Nations”. However, nowadays the globalization and information technology have made the people realized the unfairness and dishonesty of these nations and for this specific reason the syndrome of the “Dwarf Country” has been erradicated from many nations among them the Latin American countries, for example Colombia, Philippines and Ecuador. It is incredible the image of these three countries outside their bordiers. Dr Convit’s research should make the Venezuelan and the Latin American community in general proud of their achievements in science rather rather than bring resentment and rancours. A nation tied to old grudges can never progress.
