World crop production needed to double by 2050, and other food fibs

Published 14th August 2010 - 0 comments - 2111 views -

Projections often cited by 'scientists' and 'food experts' as Ive recently seen reported hark of the ficticious statistic that the world's crop production must double by mid-century, as they are based on our obesity-incuring Western diets.

The projections do not consider changing conditions for food security or how the developing world could also be allowed to produce food locally, saving travel emissions. Such points are made in the Soil Association's report 'Telling Porkies: The big fat lie about doubling food production', available here:

http://www.soilassociation.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=qbavgJQPY/c%3d&tabid=313

One of the report's findings is that organic food production could account for over 9 billion diets if nutrition inequality was addressed at the same time and healthier diets adopted in the developed world.

Some good news to bear in mind if we are thinking of starting our own allotment therefore, allowing the developing world to grow for themselves and enjoying tastier food! Happy reading!
